Between museums and creativity

Bath of Diocletian

COURSES History, History of Arts, Italian Language

LEVEL Primary School – Fourth Grade

GOALS

  • To promote students’ creativity and writing abilities
  • To promote cooperation among the pupils
  • To promote pupil-teacher as well as pupil-museum guide cooperation
  • To promote the ability to observe museum objects
  • To promote students’ knowledge about Romans and Bath of Diocletian heritage site/museum

PARTICIPANTS 20/25 students

DURATION At least 8 hours

PLAN OF ACTIVITIES

The first activity is carried out in class, through the use of LIM, thanks to which a power point presentation is shown to introduce the visit in its context. The core of the presentation is to specify what baths were, what as their use, who used them and what is their function today. This last point is highlighted through pictures showing the Baths of Diocletian as they are today and a video showing how they were at the time of the Roman Empire thanks to a multimedia reconstruction of the site (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HUPFmdDeD8 ) Methodology: brainstorming, open discussion.

The second activity takes place on site (Bath of Diocletian). Firstly, the pupils attend a guided tour of the museum in which the various areas are shown and described (Entry Hall, Calidarium, Tepidarium, Frigidarium and the Small Cloister of the Certosa of Santa Maria degli Angeli). After the visit, children are divided into groups of 4/5 members. Every group is coached by a museum guide who shows the group a specific object. The pupils are given two hours to ask questions on its purpose.

The last activity takes place either in class or in the multimedia lab. The groups are asked to create a brochure for the museum which is focused on the object they have been observing and working on during the visit to the museum. Pupils are given the possibility to surf the internet to search for interesting facts and pictures related to the object.

DISCIPLINE Storia, Storia dell’Arte, Lingua Italiana

LIVELLO DI ISTRUZIONE Classe IV, Scuola Primaria

OBIETTIVI

ArtPlanner – creating a trip planner

artplanner-scuole

ArtPlanner Scuole

The ArtPlanner is a web platform that presents a territory and allows you to plan a customized trip itinerary. Behind it there is a software that manages content such as images, texts, audio files and practical information (schedules, tickets, geographical coordinates), combining this information in multiple ways to obtain various types of front ends that update simultaneously. It was created to promote cultural heritage that is spread on a territory, and therefore based on a network of many points of interest rather than one big landmark.
Applied to schools, students research to discover, review and present the points of interest of a territory and then face the challenges of web communication to create an interactive map with all the relevant information to allow a user to create their own travel itinerary, complete with presentations, explanations, practical information and navigation instructions.
